CINEMA (The Seventh Art)

No site about Spain would be complete without mention of its world-famous cinema. Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar and the late Luis Buńuel are just three Spanish film-makers who have achieved international acclaim. Going to the cinema has become more and more popular over the past 15 years (despite or perhaps because of the DVD/ video market) and all Spanish cities and most towns now boast modern multiplex cinemas showing the very latest Hollywood and international. Beware - most films are dubbed in Spain and few cinemas outside the main tourist areas show films in the original language. Look out for V.O. (versión original) on billboards or listings. In Pilar de la Horadada, Alicante one enterprising young Spaniard now shows the blockbusters in English often before they have even hit the UK. www.cinemapilar.com All local papers have details of films showing in local cinemas and a visit to the cinema in Spain is relatively inexpensive and even better value on the "día del espectador" You can book at many cinemas through www.entradas.com

One of the great joys of Spain is the "cine de verano" (Lit. "summer cinema" or outdoor cinema) Many towns have outdoor cinemas or even just set up ad-hoc facilities. Whatever, watching a blockbuster on a summer evening in the open is a great way to cool down from the heat of the day.

There are important film festivals in many Spanish cities including Marbella http://www.sportfilm-festsant.com Seville www.festivaldesevilla.com, Santander www.sportfilm-festsant.com and L'Alfas del Pí. www.lalfas.com

Enjoy!

2008 Festivals

SEVILLE SPRING FAIR

The 2008 Seville Spring Fair officially begins at midnight on 8th April and runs for six days, ending on the following Sunday. Each day it begins at midday with the parade of carriages and riders carrying Seville's leading citizens to the bullring, the Real Maestranza.

The fair is held on the vast far bank of the Guadalquivir River which is covered with rows of casetas (individually decorated marquee tents) which are open with public bars or belong to the prominent families of Seville, groups of friends, clubs, trade associations or political parties. From around nine at night until six or seven the following morning you will find crowds partying and dancing. There are flamenco dancers and a number of the men and virtually all the women wear traditional costume, providing an astonishing array of brilliantly coloured, flounced gypsy dresses The sheer size of this spectacle is quite extraordinary and well worth visiting. Click here for a good unofficial review.

JEREZ HORSE FAIR

Jerez holds its annual Horse Fair (Feria del Caballo) during the first week in May each year. It is held in the Gonzalez Hontoria Park and the dates for 2008 are from 27th April-4th May.

The fair started as a cattle market but now includes bullfighting and flamenco dancing events and main attraction is an elaborate, choreographed equestrian ballet performed by Jerez's Royal School of Equestrian Art. It is a spectacular event where some of the world's finest horses and riders compete in endurance trials, coach driving, "pursuit and tumble" and dressage competitions, with a stunning display of the finest horses of the region.
