Llanes
Llanes is in the north-eastern corner of the region of Asturias on the Atlantic coast of Spain. The district of Llanes covers 48 kms of coastline and has 38 white sandy beaches surrounded by green countryside and cliffs.
The population of the Llanes district is about 13,000 inhabitants, around 4,500 of whom live in the town of Llanes itself. The rest of the population lives in dozens of small villages and hamlets dotted along the coast and inland towards the Sierra del Cuera mountain range. Llanes is about 100 kms from Oviedo, the capital of Asturias to the west and Santander to the east.
The people of Llanes live mainly from fishing and tourism. The medieval centre dates back to the XIII century when the town walls and tower were constructed. In the picturesque port are the “Cubes of Memory”, a creation of the Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola. The area also contains some magnificent Indiana mansions.
Llanes is a popular resort for Spaniards from inland Spain and Bilbao. It is renowned for its nightlife in the summer months and has 41 bars, 6 cafes and 34 restaurants.
